Strictly speaking for myself, I find my Stant Coolant System Pressure Tester indispensable and very well worth the money I spent on it many years ago. It sounds like it might be a pin-hole leak in one of the heater pipe/hose connections near the back of the engine. How badly did the temperature gauge swing when it went hot? Did it peg the red? For how long? Please let us know.
